How to reset the icon cache in Windows 7, 8 and Vista

When the desktop icons gets messed up, you probably don't need to reinstall the programs (or Windows!) - you just need to reset the iconcache file. It's a fairly easily process too - easier than reinstalling the applications.

1. Close all Windows explorer windows that are open.
2. Right click on task bar and choose Task Manager
3. Switch to Processes tab and right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process and confirm.


4. On File menu of Task Manager, select New Task (Run…)


5. Type CMD.EXE, click OK
6. In the Command Prompt window, type or copy and paste these commands one by one, pressing Enter after each command:
CD /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
DEL IconCache.db
EXIT
7. Back in Task Manager, go to File, select New Task (Run…)
8. Type explorer.exe and press Enter.

How to Delete a Wireless Network Profile in Windows 8 and 8.1

   Information

A wireless (Wi-Fi) network profile contains the SSID (network name), password key, and security information to be able to connect to the wireless network.

This tutorial will show you how to delete a wireless network connection profile created in Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 8.1, and Windows RT 8.1.

OPTION ONE

To Delete Wireless Network Profile using "Forget this network"

1. Do step 2 or 3 below for how you would like to open the "Networks" flyout.

2. On your desktop, click/tap on the Network icon in the taskbar notification area, and go to step 4 below. (see screenshot below)

3. Open the Charms bar, click/tap on Settings, click/tap on the Network icon, and go to step 4 below. (see screenshot below)

4. Do step 5 or 6 below depending on what Windows you have.


5. In Windows 8 or Windows RT, right click or press and hold on the wireless network (ex: Brink-Router) in the network list, click/tap on Forget this network, and go to step 7 below. (see screenshot below)

   Note

Windows does not provide the option to "Forget this network" if this is for a Mobile Broadband profile that is provisioned by the carrier. The option only appears when a custom or user profile is created.

"Forget this network" will not be available for the listed wireless networks that you didn't create a network connection profile for.

6. In Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1, click/tap on a disconnected wireless network (ex: Brink-Router) in the network list, uncheck Connect automatically, click/tap on Connect, click/tap on Forget network if it fails to connect, and go to step 7 below. (see screenshots below)

NOTE: In Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1, you will only be able to use Forget network on a saved wireless network profile if you are unable to connect to it. Otherwise you will need to use OPTION TWO below.

7. After a few moments the saved wireless network profile will now be removed (forgotten).

OPTION TWO

To Delete Wireless Network Profile in a Command Prompt

1. Open a command prompt.

2. In the command prompt, copy and paste the command below, and press Enter. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: This command will give you a list of all wireless network profiles on your PC.

netsh wlan show profiles

3. In the command prompt, type the command below, and press Enter. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: This command will delete the wireless network profile.

netsh wlan delete profile name="WirelessProfileName"


For example, if I wanted to delete my listed Brink-Router (name) wireless network profile, I would type the command below exactly.

netsh wlan delete profile name="Brink-Router"

4. When finished, you can close the command prompt if you like.
5. In some scenarios you may need to remove all the wireless network profiles stored in Windows 8.1. Luckily, you don't have to remove them one by one. That would be really awful.
All you have to do is to type this command: netsh wlan delete profile name=* i=*.

You will see it deleting all profiles in less than a second.

Fix the user account profile

To fix the user account profile, follow these steps:

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.

1. Click Start, type regedit in the Search box, and then press ENTER.
2. In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
3. In the navigation pane, locate the folder that begins with S-1-5 (SID key) followed by a long number.
4. Click each S-1-5 folder, locate the ProfileImagePath entry in the details pane, and then double-click to make sure that this is the user account profile that has the error.
   
   
   
   
   • If you have two folders starting with S-1-5 followed by some long numbers and one of them ended with .bak, you have to rename the .bak folder. To do this, follow these steps:
     1. Right-click the folder without .bak, and then click Rename. Type .ba, and then press ENTER.
        
        
     2. Right-click the folder that is named .bak, and then click Rename. Remove .bak at the end of the folder name, and then press ENTER.
        
        
     3. Right-click the folder that is named .ba, and then click Rename. Change the .ba to .bak at the end of the folder name, and then press ENTER.
        
        
   • If you have only one folder starting with S-1-5 that is followed by long numbers and ends with .bak. Right-click the folder, and then click Rename. Remove .bak at the end of the folder name, and then press ENTER.
   • If you have two folders starting with S-1-5 followed by some long numbers and one of them ended with .bak, you have to rename the .bak folder. To do this, follow these steps:

5. Double-click the folder without .bak in the details pane, double-click RefCount, type 0, and then click OK.
   
   
6. Click the folder without .bak, in the details pane, double-click State, type 0, and then click OK.
   
   
7. Close Registry Editor.
8. Restart the computer.
9. Log on again with your account.

Method 2

If the Server Service is not listed, install File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
3. Click the General tab, and then click Install.
4. Click Service, and then click Add.
5. In the Network Service list, click File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks, and then click OK.
6. Click Close.

Method 3

If File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks cannot be installed in the environment, manually add the user to the appropriate group. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Expand Computer Management (Local), expand System Tools, expand Local Users and Groups, and then click Groups.
3. In the right-pane, right-click the appropriate group where you want to add the user, and then click Add to Group.
4. Click Add, type the user account you want to add to the group, and then click OK two times.
